Nissan Micra 'V' platform to underpin Proton supermini

Proton is gazing at Nissan’s all-new ‘V’ platform, which provides the base of the 2011 Micra supermini, as a way to gain a foothold in India’s competitive small car market.

Nissan may license its ‘V’ platform to Proton. Built for emerging markets, the ‘V’ platform can reduce the weight of a car and cut the number of parts needed by 18%.

It can also be modified to different markets and regulations, said Vincent Cobee, the head of Nissan’s ‘V’ platform.

The new supermini is expected to draw greatly on the Italdesign Giugiaro designed Emas concept. Its target markets offer excise duty allowance to cars under 4m in length, so wait for an alteration of the 3,550mm-long Emas’s rear packaging.

Skoda Yeti demand outstrips supply (UK)

The Skoda Yeti compact SUV has sold out in the UK. Demand has soared since the model was launched in September 2009.

Skoda dealers have said order books have swollen, with more than 3,700 sales this year, and 4,300 since the car launched in September 2009.

“We’re pleased customers like the Yeti and it’s proving to be extremely popular, especially with predictions of another icy winter,” said a spokesperson. “But demand is stronger than anticipated – that’s why delivery is taking up to 24 weeks.”

Noting the delay problem, Skoda has assured customer to ‘price protect’ any Yeti order placed before the end of December. “This means the sale won’t be affected by the VAT increase in the new year,” the spokeswoman added.

“The price of the car now is what customers will pay when it is handed over in 2011.” Skoda UK is on course for a record sales total in 2010, and comparable delays in excess of 20 weeks have built up on other models.

PSA eyes Chinese market (CN)

PSA CEO Gregoire Olivier said Peugeot-Citroen is getting ready to release a series of upscale cars in China.

Olivier said the joint venture between PSA and Changan Automobile Group is planning to rival German firms in the luxury car market.

The first premium car will be based upon Metropolis concept car. "The same styling elements will be used for a high-level Citroen car to be developed in China," Olivier said.

The Metropolis underpins the Peugeot 407/Citroen C5 and is the first car designed by the PSA design centre in China.

PSA has stated what powertrains will be used; a hybrid is out of the question for the Chinese market, however, the concept features a plug-in hybrid motor with 454bhp. PSA and Changan Automobile Group venture plans to manufacture 200,000 vehicles annually, with production starting in the second half of 2012.

Mini to revive Moke, working on Canyon coupé

BMW Mini is looking to put the Mini Beachcomber concept in production, which was first revealed last December.

Insiders suggest two variants of the Beachcomber are on the drawing board at the Mini design studios in Munich.

One of the variants is close to being a concept car and is known within Mini as the Moke. The second variant is a smaller, 3dr vehicle called Canyon Coupé.

The two cars are being mulled alongside a Countryman coupé. Both vehicles will use a reworked pillarless Countryman platform, which will underpin the next-generation Mini Clubman, giving the Clubman the ability to accommodate AWD. The pillarless design will allow the rear-hinged rear doors on both sides of the car, tackling criticisms from right-hand drive markets like Ireland, UK, Japan and Australia of the current single-rear-doored Clubman.

The production Moke will have four genuine doors with the rear doors being ‘suicide’ doors (rear-hinged). Muscular styling and raised ride height will remain the on production model, from the Beachcomber concept. Lift-out roof panels, frameless doors and a wind-down rear window will give the feeling of an authentic cabriolet.

The Canyon Coupé will be a rugged three-door version of a ‘beach car’. This concept underpins a shortened Countryman platform, using a predictable 3dr, four seat layout and the same All4 all-wheel drive system. Mini’s designers are bearing in mind a permanent roofbox-style luggage space arrangement.

The Canyon is inspired by the three ‘Canyon Carver’, which were shown at the 2005 LA motor show. A green-light verdict on the Moke or Canyon Coupé is likely by the start of next year, partially to allow bosses to measure the early sales of the Countryman. A decision on the Countryman coupé is further away.

Transport Minister loses driving license (CZ)

Transport Minister Vit Barta, has been banned from driving for 6 months after his Maserati GranTurismo wore fake number plates. He also faces a Kč5,000 (£171/€203).


Mr Barta told police officers that he had lost his original number plate whilst driving on a dirt road and he was using the fake numberplate till he could get a replacement.

So this begs a few questions; 1. Is Czech Republic the only country in the developed world wear a transport minister isn’t/can’t drive? 2. Why can’t he obtain another set of allocated license plates for his car, and 3. Do most ministers drive around in flash cars in Eastern Europe?

Re-badged Suzukis for India (IN)

Under the Volkswagen-Suzuki tie-up last year, rebadged Suzuki Altos and Wagon Rs could be sold as VW’s and Skoda’s in India.

According to sources, Volkswagen and Suzuki are conversing about rebadging the current Alto as a Volkswagen and the Wagon R as a Skoda, starting in 2012.

These will slot in the range initially allocated for the variants of the Up/Lupo city-car that Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat are developing for Europe. The Up/Lupo won’t be sold in India because of the technology in the cars, with the cost to set up production nearby to avoid high import duties on European-sourced production, will price them out of the market.

Due to tight deadlines and cost-cutting, the revisions will strictly be limited to altered headlights, bumpers and minor trim. Interior and metalwork will remain intact. It is understood that VW may be arranging to drop a Fiat-sourced 1.3 MultiJet diesel, which Suzuki assembles under licence in India for the Alto and Wagon R.

Production is likely to be given to Volkswagen’s Chakan factory, given that Suzuki’s plant which is operated under the Maruti brand is working hard meeting demand. Last year, Suzuki/Maruti manufactured 1.1m vehicles for a 54% share, and will have to add an additional 500,000 to please the growth to 3m units a year expected by 2012.

Exports of the rebadged vehicles seem highly unlikely, unless Eastern Europe demands extra low-cost cars.

Vauxhall rejoices as it reaches a milestone (UK)

Vauxhall is celebrating a milestone for building its 750,000th Vivaro commercial van, which rolled off the production line.

In a celebration attended by the workforce and senior management from Vauxhall and Burnt Tree Vehicle Rental, the 750,000th Vivaro was handed over to Richard Metcalf, Burnt Tree’s Managing Director. Burnt Tree is the UK's largest independent car, van and specialist vehicle rental, leasing and contract hire company.

The Vivaro is built at the Luton plant in a joint venture between Vauxhall and Renault which began in 2001. The factory produces all European specification low-roof derivatives of the Vivaro for the Vauxhall/Opel brands, as well as Renault models.

Vauxhall is the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the UK, building over 60,000 vehicles at Luton so far this year.

Mark Stein, Plant Director, said: “Over the last nine years, the success of the multi-award winning Vivaro has been down to the exceptional quality that our hard working and dedicated workforce builds into every example. This milestone is a mark of the continued strength of Vivaro in markets across Europe. We are very proud to build it here in the UK.”

Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director, said: “As the biggest commercial vehicle manufacturer in Britain, Vauxhall is very proud to reach the three quarter million production milestone in Luton. Vauxhall retains its strength in the commercial vehicle market with great products, a dedicated sales team and a retail network with many years of experience in this specialist arena. I’m pleased that this special Vivaro has found a home with Burnt Tree, one of our biggest customers.”
