Facelifted Jeep Compass spied undisguised

This is the first ever time Jeep’s compact SUV, the Compass facelift has been spied completely undisguised.

While it loses its anonymous front fascia of the outgoing model, the 2012 Compass will make use of the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee.

Slatted 7-slot chrome grille, cleaner bonnet, and square off headlamps, will feature. The side profile will remain the same but the rear will be tweaked. The rear lights will be curvier and cleaner than the current model and the rear bumper sport rear fog lamps and reflectors.

Inside, the Compass will use better interior materials and the layout will be similar to that of the new Grand Cherokee. As far as we know, engines and gearboxes will stay the same but will be improved to boast better fuel economy.

In certain European markets, like the UK, Germany and Czech Republic, the Compass was killed off because the Patriot outsold it. Those markets where the Compass is still available, the updated vehicle will arrive late 2011 with a Mercedes-sourced 2.2 CRD.

Maserati guns Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Audi Q7 competitor

Maserati is looking to take on the Porsche Cayenne with a new large SUV, Fiat and Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne has revealed. It would be a performance orientated SUV that may use Ferrari-produced V8 engines.

Harald Wester, Maserati’s chief executive, said Alfa Romeo will borrow the Jeep Grand Cherokee underpinnings as the foundation for an upscale SUV, rivalling the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes M-Class/GL-Class, and the Volvo XC90. The SUV would join an inexpensive compact SUV and the 159’s descendant in 2013.

A new Maserati could centre on the DaimlerChrysler platform of the Mercedes M-Class, GL-Class and R-Class, Marchionne confirmed in a conference call with journalists.

Marchionne said: “One of the things we are now looking at in some detail is utilising this architecture and extending its application for future products both within Chrysler and outside Chrysler.”

Forthcoming Citroën C1 city-car to grow

These seem to be the first ever spy photos of the next Citroën C1. The prototype in these grainy images is thought to have been snapped on a mobile phone in a customer clinic.

Citroën is currently experimenting with the C1’s design, but judging by these pictures the next C1, it will be more daring and bold, compared to the current model. This is most obvious when the c-pillar blends into the roof-mounted rear spoiler.

However, it’s not all change. Huge over-the shoulder blindspots and single piece rear tailgate glass will remain.

Having killed-off the C2 supermini earlier this year, the C1 will grow approximately 15cm over the outgoing model, shoving the C1’s overall dimensions north of 3.6m long, thus rivalling head-on with Renault’s Twingo city-car, seen by PSA as an important competitor.

The trio (Peugeot 108, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo) will sport revised front and rear fascias from one another, however, due to costs, certain body panels will be shared. Out of the French twins, the C1 will have bolder styling over the 108.

Citroën’s product CEO, Vincent Besson, said that Citroën will be the brand that’s “taking risks, opening new territories” while Peugeot would be “the reference”.

Powering the trio will be a brand new 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder, naturally-aspirated 74bhp petrol engine, and is likely to include a 1.2 litre turbo-charged 133bhp petrol engine. No diesel engines will be available this time. The 74bhp 1.0 is expected to emit a mere 90g/km and return around 70mpg.

These engines will be made in a plant in Douvrin, Pas-de-Calais region. The C1 is currently outselling its 107 and Aygo siblings. In France, Toyota sold less than 8,500 Aygos between January – September, but in the same period, Citroën sold 24,000 C1s, representing 10% of Citroën’s sales in France.

The PSA and Toyota trio will continue to be built in Toyota’s assembly plant in Kolin, Czech Republic.

Citroën is at liberty on the C1 since it’s currently working on an independent range of simple models that will be placed alongside in its line-up. These new models will have smaller amount of ‘premium’ equipment but, significantly, not a drastically lower price.

Citroën will still use the C1’s tiny size increase to expand the model’s possibility. The new C1 line-up is expected to include entry-level 3dr and 5dr variants, through to a range-topping ‘Exclusive’ trim level.

Saab to axe 200 employees

Swedish car maker, Saab, is set to trim 200 of its temporary employees (1/8th of its current staff), according to a union official.

Hakan Skott, union spokesperson at Saab, said that the action was likely after Saab’s new owner, Dutch supercar maker Spyker, cut its sales target from 60,000 units in February, to 45,000 in summer and ultimately to just 30,000 cars at end of October.

"I'm not exactly surprised [about the layoffs]. We reduced our sales forecast just a couple of weeks ago and there is a decline in sales every year around Christmas and at the end of the year," Skott said. "I'm sure that by February-March we will see an upward trend and people will buy cars again," he added.

Saab has said it needs to sell around 80,000 cars annually to break even. Spyker's CEO Victor Muller said, "There is absolutely no reason to worry. Our plans for the future still stand. Next year, we will build 80,000 cars".

"You take them aboard when you need them and when they are not needed, they are not on board."

Mazda to match Volkswagen quality

Top of Mazda’s agenda is interior quality. According to Peter Birtwhistle, chief designer at Mazda’s R&D centre, the Japanese car company would like to change the perceived quality of their car interiors as the recently launched Mazda2 was slated for its interior appearance.

“If you sit in a Volkswagen Polo you get a really good sense of quality,” he said.

Mazda hopes to lift its standards to VW levels, but did note that pricing would be affected.

“Using better materials of course means that prices may rise slightly and we must balance that without compromising our position in the market as a value brand,” Birtwhistle said.

Polyurethane Body Kits

Car performance body kits are now a days being manufactured by different materials. All have some advantages and disadvantages and selecting a body kit of a particular material depends totally on the price, conditions, usage and other various factors. The different materials could be polyurethane, fiber glass, carbon fiber, ABS plastic e.t.c.

In this post I intend to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of car body kits made up of polyurethane. I hope this will make your mind even more clear and lead you to a better decision making when selecting the performance body kit for your next exterior car modification.

Advantages:

The biggest advantage of attempting your car body kit modification and then replacing it with polyurethane is its durability. These are more long lasting than the famous fiber glass body kits as the material is more flexible. This flexibility makes it to get mount on your car very easily. So if you are reluctant in changing your car's body kit and consider installing a new one very tough job then polyurethane body kits will change your opinion once and for all. This attribute makes a car modification quite simple and pretty much a DIY job hence saving time and money.

Since polyurethane is a hard and flexible substance, it does not damage easily as compared to its other competitors. So you need to bang real hard your car in order to place an impact on the kit. But wait. Did I say "Bang Real Hard!!!" you definitely would not love to strike your car anywhere no matter what material your car body is and this feeling become even more extreme when the material is polyurethane. Because the moment your car strikes and an impact is laid on the kit, there's a great disadvantage waiting for you which I will discuss in the disadvantages section.

Disadvantages:

Since it is a high quality material so generally the polyurethane body kits are more costly than other materials so you really need to have tight pockets if you are going for it. This is a great drawback as it goes out of reach for many car enthusiasts and they cannot afford it at all. Secondly, painting over polyurethane is not a convenient job at all at paint requires more adhesion and also sags more quickly over time when exposed to sun or heat.

Furthermore, these are more heavy than fiber glass, so when you mount them over your car keep your mind well prepared for more fuel consumption as more power is going to be required by your car to drag it. Now coming to the disadvantage because of which you would not love to hit your car and cause an impression on it. Polyurethane body kits are not easily repairable or in some cases, it is impossible do retain the original shape of it and you will only have to replace it with new one as the car dents are not going to be removed. So you have to be even more careful on the road.

Bringing my discussion to an end, polyurethane sure is an expensive material to afford but think of it from the positive angle. The less the people will have them, the more your car is going to be unique. The decision is sure in your hands.

Photo Gallery: 2011 KIA Optima

Kia Motors Corporation held the world premiere of its all-new Optima Hybrid sedan at the Los Angeles motor show. Created primarily with the U.S market in mind, the latest model in Kia’s design-led transformation employs a truly innovative Kia-developed powertrain that promises to deliver exceptional hybrid performance and 48mpg for class-leading fuel economy.

Arriving in U.S Kia dealer showrooms early next year, the Optima Hybrid is the brand’s first-ever hybrid for North America and uses a ‘full parallel hybrid system’ to deliver a unique blend of performance – acceleration to 62mph in 9.2 seconds, top speed 121mph – and economy, achieving a 40.7% mpg improvement compared with a regular Optima.

“Kia Motors is proud to unveil its first-ever hybrid for the North American market,” comments Hyoung-Keun Lee, Vice Chairman of Kia Motors Corporation. “The new Optima Hybrid features a unique architecture and is packed with innovative technologies that demonstrate Kia’s on-going commitment to investing in R&D, and to developing environmentally friendly vehicles for the future.

“Although these new technologies presented our engineers with a series of complex challenges to overcome, the resulting Optima Hybrid delivers a fully automatic, seamless and enjoyable drive, together with real-world benefits for our customers,” adds Mr. Lee.

The Kia Optima Hybrid is equipped with an ingenious, simple and cost-effective ‘parallel hybrid system’. The 2.4 litre petrol engine is mated to a small electric motor and drives the front wheels via a 6 speed automatic transmission – without the traditional torque converter. A special clutch is fitted between the engine and motor, enabling the petrol engine to be de-coupled from the powertrain so that Optima can be operated in zero-tailpipe-emissions, full-electric drive mode from standstill up to 62mph. The system’s configuration does not require a high-capacity electric motor and generator, saving weight and cost. With the Optima also weighing in as one of the lightest cars in the segment, high performance and outstanding fuel efficiency are a natural result. The lightweight architecture of the new Optima platform, combined with the lightweight lithium polymer battery pack, brings the Kia Optima Hybrid in at just 3,490lbs, 230lbs lighter than the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Automatic, seamless daily driving experience:

When setting off the Optima Hybrid operates in Electric Mode. As vehicle speed rises, the Hybrid Starter motor/Generator (HSG) starts the petrol engine and the clutch is closed, allowing the engine to take over the task of propelling the car. The electric motor switches into hybrid operation and serves as both a secondary engine (during full acceleration and hill-climbing) and a generator to recharge the battery pack as necessary. Whenever the car comes to a stop for more than a few seconds, the petrol engine automatically shuts off to completely eliminate tailpipe emissions.

When braking, the electric motor converts kinetic energy into electricity for storage in the battery pack. The 8.5 kW HSG also functions as a generator to re-charge the battery pack if the state of charge is low and when the car is stationary. Throughout the entire driving experience, under all conditions, the entire hybrid operation is automatic and seamless.

An unusually responsive and rewarding drive is guaranteed by the Optima Hybrid’s 30kW Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) synchronous electric motor, which produces 40.7PS and 205Nm of torque from 0-to-1,400 rpm in electric mode, and the combined (electric motor plus petrol engine) hybrid powertrain output of 209PS and 265Nm.

Described by Kia engineers as a Transmission-Mounted-Electric-Drive (TMED), the 30kW IPM electric motor sits within the car’s extended transmission casing (between the petrol engine and the automatic gearbox) and is the world’s first oil-cooled system.

Kia’s Optima Hybrid employs a lithium polymer battery array developed in partnership with LG Chem. Lithium polymer offers the benefits of lithium-ion (used in laptops and cell phones), but adds robustness and packaging flexibility, making it ideal for automotive applications. These new batteries provide an optimum balance between power delivery, energy density and thermal stability.

Compared with nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium polymer batteries weigh 20-to-30% less, occupy 40% less volume and are 10% more efficient. They also hold their charge for 25% longer than nickel metal hydride batteries and are so reliable that the Optima’s battery pack will not require replacing during the vehicle’s lifespan – at least 10 years and 150,000 miles.

The power and energy density of this new type of battery enabled Kia engineers to create a lighter more compact power pack – with a 34kW output and weighing just 43.6kg – designed to minimize intrusion of the Optima’s boot space.

The complete hybrid system is controlled by the Optima’s Hybrid Control Unit (HCU) which acts as the car’s mastermind and integrates the smooth operation of the engine’s ECU, transmission’s TCU, battery management system (BMS), low voltage converter (LDC). This brain also gives the Optima a ‘Fail-Safe’ back-up capability and a ‘Limp-home’ mode.

Optimising the Theta II petrol engine:

Taking advantage of the instant and continuously available torque from the electric motor, Kia modified its popular 2.4 litre Theta II engine to operate on an Atkinson cycle, raising the compression ratio by 20% to maximize its efficiency and achieving a 10% fuel saving over a regular Theta engine. This cycle generates a little less torque, but the electric motor compensates for any loss and consequently, the Optima Hybrid’s overall power and torque outputs are greater than the regular model.

For the Optima Hybrid, Kia has modified the 6 speed automatic transmission found on the conventional Optima for hybrid application. The traditional torque converter is replaced with an electric motor and a high-efficiency oil pump. This new gearbox allows EV mode operation, maximizes regeneration of kinetic energy during braking and also provides a more responsive drive than a CVT system.

To maximise the Optima Hybrid’s performance and minimise its fuel consumption, special attention has been paid to its aerodynamics. The car is lowered by 5mm and new features include an ‘active air flap’ in the front grille, smooth underfloor panels, low-drag wheels and low rolling resistance tyres. The drag coefficient is lowered to a remarkable Cd 0.26.

Energy and fuel-saving technologies features in the Optima Hybrid include a regenerative braking system, electric – rather than hydraulic – assisted power steering, and an electric air compressor capable of delivering high air-conditioning performance.

Two independent liquid cooling systems are fitted to the Optima Hybrid powertrain. The standard high-temperature circuit manages engine cooling and passenger compartment heating. The second low-temperature circuit cools the hybrid starter-generator and the power electronics. The boot-mounted battery pack does not require liquid cooling and its temperature is controlled by a simple ventilation fan beneath the rear parcel shelf.

Stylish luxurious sedan with premium features:

Aside from its unique hybrid powertrain the new Optima Hybrid incorporates all the technical features and the multiple choice of premium comfort and convenience equipment offered by its regular stablemates.

All Optima models share common major dimensions and a unitary construction. Featuring front-wheel-drive, Optima utilises independent suspension systems, with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link layout at the rear.

Outside, new Optima Hybrid offers dual chrome-tipped exhausts, heat-reflective glass, outside mirror turn signal indicators and 16” alloy wheels fitted with 205/65R16 tyres. 17” alloy wheels with 215/55/R17 tyres will be available as an option.

Inside, the instrument panel has an ECO Guide to promote economical driving habits and is contoured toward the driver to suggest a cockpit feel with precise gauges and controls for an overall sport performance experience without sacrificing comfort or roominess.

In addition to the equipment found on the Optima LX, Optima Hybrid comes with 6 way manual adjustable driver’s seat w/electric lumbar support, illuminated vanity mirrors, trip computer, satellite navigation/CD system, front fog lamp, electrically adjustable/heated mirrors, chrome door handles, LED tail lamps, rear lip spoiler, x6 airbags, ESC w/hill start assist, dual zone automatic temperature control w/rear vents, push-button start w/smart key, leather steering wheel and gearknob, chrome interior door handles, glove box illumination and rear reading lamps. A Premium Technology Package is offered, and includes a panoramic sunroof, 17” alloy wheel design, 4 way electrically adjustable front passenger's seat, driver's seat memory, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel, bi-xenon headlamps w/automatic levelling, leatherette-wrapped centre fascia, auto-dimming rear-view mirror w/Homelink and compass, satellite navigation system w/reversing camera and SIRIUS Traffic, and an 8 speaker Infinity audio system.

Try Iridium Spark Plugs For The Next Spark Plug Replacement.

Are you looking for your car's spark plug replacement because the present spark plugs have wore off? I have an advice for you. This time try embedding in your car engine, iridium spark plugs. The advent of modern technology has also effected the cars as well and have made them much more efficient.Using iridium tips in spark plugs is also one of its dimensions. Iridium spark plugs has many advantages and it can really pimp your ride. Refer to my last article on how spark plugs can pimp your ride and how you can perform spark plug replacement.

Advantages Of Having Iridium Spark Plugs.

Before acquainting you about the advantages of iridium spark plugs, I want to make one thing clear. Spark plugs don't enhance the efficiency of the car beyond its limits but instead they make it more efficient according to the car's own potential. So clear your mind from any misconceptions that its only the spark plugs that will make your crawling ride in to a super fast car.

Now coming to the advantages of iridium spark plugs, they sure are durable and strong enough as compared to other conventional platinum tipped, spark plugs. Durability of iridium spark plugs can be compared as it has a life of almost 60, 000 miles where as the conventional will give you 20,000 to 40,000 miles. Of course because of the good quality of the element, the quality of spark is improved and gives a much better spark hence improving fuel efficiency.

The best thing about the iridium spark plug is that it wears off rather slowly as compared to platinum spark plugs. The reason is of course, iridium is much more durable than its "colleague" platinum. Besides this, the melting point of iridium is much more higher than platinum. The melting point of iridium is 4450 F where as that of platinum is almost 3216 F. That's a huge difference. Furthermore, iridium is 8 times more rigid than platinum where it can endure a pressure of 160 Kpsi as compared to platinum which can stand a pressure of not more than 20 Kpsi. Because of these qualities, the iridium spark plugs wear off much slowly as compared to those conventional spark plugs so you don't have a headache of replacing your spark plugs after some years.

Learning above attributes of iridium I bet you would go for high quality iridium spark plugs the very next time you perform your car's spark plug replacement.

Next Ford F-150 to sport partial unibody platform

Thanks to CAFE obligations with their ever- stringent emissions and fuel economy legislation's, Ford has a problem trying to reach the 30mpg by 2016 with its F-150 pick-up.

In a bid to improve fuel economy, Ford is brain-storming ideas as to what materials should be used in/on the next F-150. This includes a partial unibody structure, aluminium and magnesium. With all these combined, Ford has the potential of achieving 20% better highway mpg than Ford’s all-new 2011 engine line-up.

Ford is very likely to keep a partial traditional body-on-frame design, keeping the cabin and cargo area apart, while using a unibody on half of the truck. This new tactic to the foundation would allegedly be produced mainly of magnesium/aluminium alloy.

Ford may also consider using aluminium for the F-150’s body panels, apart from the preservation of traditional steel for the cargo box for durability reasons.
